12 months of Balanced Instability (2011 edition)

Dec 21 2011 Published by under meme

It's Holiday Meme Time! Every year around this time we bloggers take a minute to go through our posts from the last year, and re-visit the first sentence of each (below). This is a tradition that pre-dates me, but you can learn the whole history over at Drug Monkey's place. This has been a pretty awesome year. My lab is really starting to click, and I am starting to almost feel like I know what is going on (famous last words!). Over here, I gotta say, I was kind of on a roll this year 🙂 I'm really looking forward to seeing how 2012 is going to turn out, and I hope that you will all stick around for the fun (teaser: I'll probably have to start thinking about my first tenure-review! ACK!).

Since MORE is always MOAR, I'm going to piggy-back the memes here and also ask you for a special holiday de-lurk. PLS came up with this one, which I think is a super idea. Please say hello!

Balanced Instability, 2011
Jan: Thanks everyone for following me around! [ed-my first post here at Scientopia!]

Feb: One of the little bits of advice I got when I was on the job market is that I should make my own website.

Mar: As you may know, my department is in the middle of a junior faculty search.

April: That's right, I'm outta here.

May: I got along well with my postdoc advisor.

June: As I am sitting on the airplane, I have had a fair amount of time to get some thinking done without any of the common interruptions.

July: As of today, I have been in my tenure-track position for ONE FULL YEAR!!!

Aug: Blech blech blech.

Sept: OMG academic peer review is totally fucked and it never works and the third reviewer is a stupid idiot asshole!!!11!!!1!

Oct: Once a month or so, Dr.Mrs.G and I pay a babysitter to hang out with Mini-G so that we can have a sanity- and relationship-saving "date night".

Nov: A right of passage for most graduate programs is the General (or Qualifying) exam.

Dec: One of my pet peeves is the passive voice.

I hope you enjoyed the look back over the last year. Don't forget to take a minute to comment, because it would be the best present ever if you could let me know a little about you (and what you are looking for when you visit me here). 🙂

UPDATED: Now with linkies, for your clicking enjoyment! And because Drug Monkey pointed out to me how useful that would be.

    Here is my comment. :p

I like you (and your blog) just the way they are. Happy holidays!

I love this! And what's funny is that since I recently found your blog, I read pretty much every single post over the past few weeks and knew the context for all of those little snippets - it's always fun to be "in the know".

Anyways, I really love your blog and you're giving me some serious confidence that one day I could be as awesome as you and have my own lab and my own life and actually like it. However, I wish I would have found your tips for new grad students about 6 years ago and maybe I might not have fallen for many of the traps for which you speak.

I am also asking Santa (ok you) for my own Christmas present, which would be some tips for a noob post doc. I am about to graduate, in the process of writing up my diss, and have accepted a postdoc and am mostly excited, but also terrified to move away from those who know me and know how I work. I'm moving into a super productive lab with what I see as high expectations, so I want to know some of the things you wished you knew, wished you did, wished you didn't do, as a starting postdoc. For this, I will be eternally grateful. {this is merely a suggestion for a new blog post for the upcoming year ahead, I'm not graduating until march, so that should give you adequate time}. Thanks!!

Thanks for stopping by! I'm clearly very popular with the Katies 🙂 Keep your eyes peeled for requested post in the future, and good luck in your new position!

ask me some questions and I'll answer; on the other hands, it's difficult for me to come up with something but in any case, have a look here:

for my comment because that's the best I can do without being asked any questions.

With two abandoned PhD attempts (one for each of the first 2 kids) it's interesting watching someone else kick off an academic career and deal with all the kinds of stuff I'm missing. Different field, but I doubt the "challenges" are all that different.

Also, funny and crude twitter hashtags, ftw.
